Show Blog:
There’s a famous quote by Leonardo DaVinci that says,
“Do you know that our soul is composed of harmony?”
So this begs the question, is your life out of tune? We are showing up to remind you that you don’t have to live in discord and instead can find harmonious joy through the healing benefits of sound. We are going to empower you to harness sound to create harmony in your life, home, and relationships so you can attune to greater harmony. We are talking music, sound medicine, and free, natural healing through our powerful ears and bodies today. As a singer, songwriter, and lover of music, researching sound healing is so fascinating to me. This show makes me a happy girl because I can really get lost and geek out about music, sounds, and ancient healing modalities! I had a vocal coach that was working with me on singing my own songs, but she told me that she also taught students how to heal using tones and techniques that are not that different from singing scales or songs. Since then I’ve been interested in this concept but didn’t really dive into healing with my voice until recently. Your spoken words, your voice, your singing, your shouts are all either helping or hurting someone. I’ve long been intrigued by the idea that music is healing since clearly, it has been healing for me as a singer-songwriter.. but researching the concept of sound led me to understand scientifically what sound actually is and how our ears and bodies are receiving certain sounds.
While we may not agree on musical preferences or pleasurable sounds, Mike and I like most of the same music but sometimes if I play too much pop or country he asks to change the playlist. Do you know why this is, Mike?
“I guess it goes back to the DaVinci quote, some songs or genres are harmonious to my body’s frequency, and others are not.”
Music carries vibrational energy so certain songs that might have different tones can cause discord in our body. For example, country music uses the same three of four chords so when Mike says things like all the songs sound the same, he is right. Same with pop, there are chord progressions that are used over and over again. Most pop songs are written with the same progression and certain chords represent a happy feeling or a sad feeling. For example, a major chord is a happy sound. A minor chord is a melancholy sound. I enjoy writing, singing, and listening to all types of music. The music that doesn’t resonate with me is death metal or violent rap.
Most of us can agree music is amazing. Most of us also can agree that music is one of the things that connects humans from all cultures and every corner of the earth. Music is a universal language. You don’t have to speak Spanish to enjoy a good salsa.
Much of why we like certain types of music is because it connects us to a former memory good or bad or a version of ourselves and it expresses emotion on our behalf. When I am alone, I can blast a great song and belt it out or write a great song and feel completely free of the emotional blocks I may have been feeling prior to using what I refer to as “music therapy”. So, this begs the question, can sound heal us? The answer is yes and in today’s episode, we are going to go very deep into the healing power of sound.
We’re also going to cover:
- The silent symphony and what that is
- How to find harmony in your life in your environment
- The importance of your ears
- Understanding your body’s way of using and processing sound
- The science on sound healing
- 10 Different sound healing modalities you can practice right now.
So let’s start at the beginning. It reminds me of a great quote by Barbara Marciniak “In the beginning there was sound. Sound began the whole thing, and in sound resides tremendous power. It opens doorways to other realities, for with the production of sound, energy can move from one system to another.”
Sound vibration is measured by hertz. When sound travels through air, the atmospheric pressure varies periodically. The number of pressure variations per second is called the frequency of sound and is measured in Hertz (Hz) which is defined as cycles per second. The higher the frequency, the more high-pitched a sound is perceived. Whereas sound intensity (also referred to as sound power or sound pressure) is measured in units called decibels.
The silent symphony
If you’re new to our show, you may not have heard us say that everything is energy. This isn’t some “woo woo” theory. This is science. One of the laws of physics says that energy cannot be created or destroyed but just transformed. In physics, sound is actually silent but we recognize sound as something we hear. Sound is just vibration and some of the frequencies are inaudible to the human ear. But, all energy has its own frequency of vibration. Everything inside of us vibrates at its own frequency. Yes, even our cells, organs, and bones have a vibrational frequency. The brain translates the vibrations of sounds into content. The brain gets to decide what the sounds mean. There’s a mathematical signal that is being exchanged from mouth to ear to brain. It’s very complex and magical.
Our chakras or energy centers all have their own frequency as well and sometimes they can get pitchy or “out of tune” – this is referred to as ‘entrainment’; the ability of one vibration to affect and change another. The universe has a harmonious flow and so do our bodies. All things are making a unique sound right now. Just pause for a moment and realize an inaudible universal symphony is taking place right now inside of you and outside of you. In Ancient Greece, Pythagoras proposed that all planets emanate frequencies that mirror the notes on the musical scale. Science refers to this as the silent symphony.
As we will share later in this episode, modern scientists are really only beginning to understand how effective sound can be as a healing instrument, but indigenous culture and ancient religions have understood this concept for thousands of years. For example, people in Ancient Egypt, stretching back as far as 4000 BC, used certain vowel sounds in their sacred rituals.
In many ways, you look back at different societies and they had a lot more figured out about sound than we do presently. As I was researching I came across a recent study, published on the Ancient-origins website, claiming “that the ancient Egyptians benefited from the “sound” in the construction of the Great Pyramid in Giza, and relied on the discovery of a dead-end in the rock inside the pyramid room as a tube of acoustic resonance that generates ultrasonic waves at a base frequency within 5 Hz.” There are so many questions about the pyramids from modern scientists that don’t believe it was built in the way it’s been historically presented. What we do know is that scientists have confirmed that ultrasound can produce a changing state of consciousness leading to psychological visions.
If this is true, were the builders of the pyramid in ancient Egypt aware of some very expressive forms of sound technology, such as the effect of ultrasound on the human body? The questions are many but we do know that the pharaonic chamber was deliberately designed to generate ultrasound.
What we kept uncovering while researching is that your body is also carrying out a silent symphony and you can look at these internal vibrations like an orchestra playing perfectly in tune. But intriguing research reveals that ill bodies are vibrating “out of tune.” If you’re curious how sound is playing a role in your life today, let’s look at sound and harmony:
How to find harmony in your life:
Since everything has a sound when it is operating smoothly, everything also has a sound when it is suffering. When you’re suffering you likely cry, complain, or criticize using sound. Right? And what do we say about suffering?
Suffering is for suckers!
When you’re in harmony you likely celebrate by whistling, singing, listening to music, humming, gleefully share gratitude or laugh with ease. And what do we say about life?
Life is a celebration!
Your vibrational frequency is always either in harmony or in discord. When you are suffering around your loved ones, guess what happens? Their energy is pulled into a different vibration as well. This is why we want to empower you to find harmony in your relationships and in your home because your environment creates your reality. And as Tony Robbins says, “the quality of your relationships is the quality of your life.” You can’t have toxic relationships full of discord and harmonious life, they are not a match.
The importance of today’s episode is to share how to harmonize using the free medicine of sound. Sound healing is a technique used to harmonize any energy that is out of balance and restore it back to its natural and most healthy vibration.
The importance of your ears:
Let’s continue by exploring certain sounds, tools, habits, and healing modalities that use one of your most actively powerful organs that processes all sounds. Pod Fam, can you guess what organ we are referring to? If you said the ear, you are correct. So, at around 18 weeks of pregnancy, babies hear their very first sounds. From that point on, your ears never stop working.
Even when you are asleep, you are still hearing every sound around you. Thankfully your brain allows you to sleep and blocks out some sounds so you can get a good night’s rest. But certain sounds like when your baby cries or when a fire alarm goes off trigger your brain to wake up. This is because your brain has identified sounds that require you to wake from sleep and essentially those sounds make your ears function as if you were awake. Your ability to hear is dependent upon the tiny hairs that reside inside your ear. Inside the cochlea, there are thousands of tiny hair cells that can change sound vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. While your ears help you hear, they are also responsible for your sense of equilibrium. Your ears play a part in transmitting taste signals to your brain, meaning that your ears have a role in how you enjoy food. Nerves run through the middle ear that sends taste signals from your tongue to your brain.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the ear is seen as the microcosm of the body. Chinese Medicine demonstrates that the ear is an extraordinarily powerful nexus of energy through which the entire body can be treated because all of the organs and body parts are represented within its concentric folds. If you’ve ever been given an acupuncture treatment the ears are commonly used to heal whatever you’re seeking to balance. If you’ve ever had a Chinese massage they never leave out the ears and sometimes that is the best part of the massage.
In fact, nature usually gives us some signals of the importance of our organs by mimicking them in nature or in other forms. The shape of the outer ear for example is very similar to the inverted fetus in the womb. When you see this, you recognize the importance of this sense and organ because it is connected to our life force, how we started, and as you may have already guessed from our show thus far, sound can, make us or break us.
We hear music better on our left side: according to a study by the Universities of California and Arizona published in Science magazine, our right ear is more responsive to speech from birth, while the left side is more receptive to continuous tones and musical sounds.
This is so true. In the studio, I always uncover my right ear to hear myself better and outside of the mix. My left ear is hearing my voice in the mix and the music. It’s just more talented than my right ear.
There’s actually a lot of science on how sounds can heal and hurt our health.
For example, if sounds are too loud they can cause us pain. As a reminder, loudness is measured in what’s called decibels. Over time, any sound that’s 85 decibels or higher can cause hearing loss — or other hearing problems. So as a general rule, you want to avoid sounds that are 85 decibels and above as they can cause pain and permanent damage. It’s important when you’re in a loud environment such as on an airplane to protect your precious ears. We like to use noise-canceling headphones and either listen to something or just use them to cover our ears. You can also do damage to your ears by being in loud cities or restaurants, clubs, and concerts. But, did you know even the collective sounds of your appliances add to the loudness load your ears carry? There are certain sounds that create a lot of discord in our bodies like nails on a chalkboard.
“A person does not hear sound only through the ears; he hears sound through every pore of the body. It permeates the entire being, and according to its particular influence, either slows or quickens the rhythm of the blood circulation; it either awakens or soothes the nervous system”
― Hazrat Inayat Khan
Sounds that heal:
Every organ in our body creates a signature sound pattern through its operations. Cymatic studies have measured these signature patterns produced by the body and because of this work we can determine the healthy range of frequencies in the body.
“In sound we are born, in sound we are healed” ― Mehtab Benton
Cymatics is the science of observing the effects of sound and frequency on matter usually in the form of liquid or powder. The term was coined by Swiss scientist Hans Jenny, who used specialized equipment that allowed a viewer to observe shapes formed in a medium under the influence of sound wave frequencies. When there’s illness there’s discord in the body’s frequencies. The cymatic therapies use frequencies to heal the body. They determine the vibrational input needed to restore harmony and then use sound to train the body to regenerate for total body harmony.
Similarly, we’ve seen what discord does to water molecules thanks to the research we have from Masuro Emoto. As a reminder, this is the study of how certain words placed on containers of water changed the makeup of the water. Kind words showed beautiful shapes, unkind words created murky waters. As humans, we are made up of over 70% water so we have to take these studies to heart and use these modalities to heal ourselves.
7 scientific studies on how sound is being used to heal our bodies:
- Biologist Helene Grimal partnered with the composer Fabien Maman to study the effects of sounds on cancer cells. They exposed these cells to the human voice, gongs, guitars, and xylophones, and ultimately observed that all the instruments—especially singing—were effective at destroying the structural composition of these cells. “Cancer cells cannot maintain their structure when specific sound wave frequencies attack the cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes. When the vibratory rate increases, the cells cannot adapt or stabilize themselves and die by disintegrating and exploding.”
- There is a new study in Scientific American on sound healing that has the beginning findings of healing Alzheimer’s. “The study bathed patients in flashing light and pulsing sounds both tuned to a frequency of 40 hertz and they found it might reverse key signs of Alzheimer’s in the brain.”
- Research has also shown that Alzheimer’s patients showed improvements in thinking and memory after being exposed to low-frequency sound vibrations. A healthy body vibrates at a specific frequency. By exposing sick minds to specific, balancing frequencies, improvements can be seen in everything from PTSD to autism to depression.
- Another study found that treating dementia with the healing waves of sound shows more signs of how sound will be used to heal patients in the future. The study applied Ultrasound waves to the whole brain and that was found to improve cognitive dysfunction in mice with conditions simulating vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is possible that this type of therapy may also benefit humans and more research is being done.
- A study published in the Southern Medical Journal (2005) demonstrated the beneficial effects of music in hospital settings. Researchers reported that “For children and adults, music effectively reduces anxiety and improves mood for medical and surgical patients, and for patients in intensive care units.” Researchers also noted that ambient music increased empathy in caregivers without interfering with the technical aspects of treatment. Certain researchers accredited the wings of hospitals that played music to faster healing patients to those that didn’t play music.
- A Finnish study group has investigated “how listening to classical music affected the gene expression profiles of both musically experienced and inexperienced participants. All the participants listened to W.A. Mozart’s violin concert Nr 3, G-major, K.216 that lasts 20 minutes. Listening to music enhanced the activity of genes involved in dopamine secretion and transport, synaptic function, learning, and memory. One of the most up-regulated genes, synuclein-alpha (SNCA) is a known risk gene for Parkinson’s disease that is located in the strongest linkage region of musical aptitude.”
- A Japanese study published in 2018 examined the stress-reducing effect of 528 hz (MI or E) on the endocrine system. The researchers concluded that 528 Hz music has “an especially strong stress-reducing effect, even after only five minutes of exposure.”
Aside from healing sound has been found to create pleasure not just through music and dancing but through enjoying the cuisine. “Scientists have studied the sounds you’re listening to while eating can create different taste experiences. Whatever the acoustic atmosphere, it could be affecting how you experience the flavor of the food and drink you’re consuming, according to a growing body of research. Good music at the right volume creates a great experience for the person dining out. Loud volumes might be doing more than hurting our ears—they might also suppress how we perceive the saltiness and sweetness of foods, according to research published in Food Quality and Preference.”
“One recent study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, found that background noise like what you encounter on an airplane—notorious for being extremely loud for passengers, typically reaching around 85 decibels at cruising levels—may in fact boost the taste of umami, a savory flavor known as the fifth taste and found in foods like tomatoes and mushrooms.”
There are also hundreds of studies on how music can create wellness, improve libido, enhances relationships, and boosts your immunity. Music is also a great tool to process emotions and manage your stress response. Music healing will need to be its own show!
Tuning in to the differences between sounds and frequencies:
Most music is tuned to the note A 440 Hz. Sound healers and alchemists use 432 Hz because they attribute it to the sacred geometry and mathematics of the universe. Without too much math and music theory, they have found that 8hz is a natural frequency of the earth’s electromagnetic heartbeat. 8 Hz is also the frequency that marks the transition between the alpha and theta brainwave states.
“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” – Confucius
There’s a lot of science on certain tones. For example 528Hz- miracle tone is linked to DNA repair, it is our base frequency for life. 432Hz- Greek philosopher Pythagoras prescribed music as medicine, asserting that the musical intervals he discovered are clear expressions of sacred geometry. He stated that music is the phenomena of numbers in time, reflecting the structures of nature, and has the power to restore balance in an organism.
As Nikola Tesla said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”
Let’s talk about solfeggio tuning briefly. Truly this could be a whole show, but to touch on these tones is important. Solfeggio frequencies use numerology.
“If you knew the magnificence of the three, six and nine, you would have a key to the universe.” – Nikola Tesla.
As we look at the six original Solfeggio frequencies, using the Pythagorean method, we find the base or root vibrational numbers are 3, 6, & 9. The solfeggios are used to stimulate emotional release and facilitate spiritual transcendence. Each solfeggio frequency has a specific vibration and energetic emotion attached.
“Dr. Joseph Puleo, a physician, and herbalist began exploring Solfeggio in the 1990s. He developed a theory that each of the six frequencies carried precise characteristics, and that the tones could be used therapeutically.
In 1988, Biochemist Glen Rein, PhD, converted and recorded Solfeggio scale Gregorian chants to scalar audio waves. The results were played to test tubes containing DNA. By measuring UV light absorption, Rein could document the effect of the music on DNA. He also compared the chants with other forms of music, including rock. While rock music had little or no influence, the chants caused a marked increase of light absorption, up to nine percent, leading Rein to conclude that Solfeggio scale sound frequencies cause resonance in DNA, and may have healing properties.
Since then, others have explored the healing potential of the Solfeggio frequencies. According to an article in Anti-Aging Medical News (Winter 2006), pulsed frequencies had a positive impact on osteoporosis. In another study, snails exposed to a range of frequencies, including some in the Solfeggio range, became more focused and active compared to a control group. “It was evident that exposure enhanced the creative capacity of the brain in snails,” the author wrote.
The proclaimed “Solfeggio frequencies”
UT – 396 Hz – Liberating Guilt and Fear
RE – 417 Hz – Undoing Situations and Facilitating Change
MI – 528 Hz – Transformation, Healing, and Miracles (DNA Repair)
FA – 639 Hz – Connecting/Relationships
SOL – 741 Hz – Awakening Intuition, Solutions, Stimulates Creative Expression
LA – 852 Hz – Returning to Spiritual Order or spiritual homecoming

10 different sound healing modalities:
In order to be healthy, we need to make sure our senses are in harmony with our brain and body. This probably goes without saying but, stimulating our senses in the proper way can help heal our body, and remove old patterns that are no longer serving us. We can intentionally stimulate our nervous system to proactively create harmony using sound. We can raise our vibration using all of our senses but the main sensory organ to rewire our neural pathways in the ear even though as we said our entire body can feel and hear sound through vibrations. But, as discussed the fundamental connection to our brain and body is our ears. Our ears determine our ability to rest, be alert, panic or be at peace.
- Chanting is a powerful healing agent because you hear it outside and inside the ear, body, and your brain. Scientifically speaking it activates the neural circuit between the temporal lobes and the prefrontal cortex. It can stimulate our bodies in a powerful way and bring us into altered states of consciousness. Chanting, mantra, or sound meditation has been used since ancient times. With mantra meditation, words spoken inside the mind also carry an inaudible sound frequency. Our thoughts are creating a frequency in the mind. To practice a mantra ritual you can go to a transcendental meditation coach or use something from a Sanskrit text or use one or all of our incantations to create both sound with healthy thoughts and speak the empowerment sounds. If you missed the incantation, mantra, and affirmation episode bonus, just scroll back to the beginning of season 2 and you’ll see a bonus episode named: 100 empowerment incantations. One way is to create a resonant sound and embody the chant or mantra technique of sound healing is to simply chant the word OM.
- Another healing modality is to listen to binaural beats or Isochronic Tones. An early sound healing pioneer was biophysicist Gerald Oscar, who in the early 1970s revealed that when different tones are played in each ear, the brain automatically creates another one called a binaural beat. This reveals that sound has the ability to link brain waves in both hemispheres, in a phenomenon called “brainwave entrainment.” To practice using binaural beats, wear headphones and listen to harmonizing tones. We will pause if you need to grab some headphones because we are going to play one through the remainder of the show. You can experiment with how the binaural beat makes you feel. Brainwave entrainment that features embedded binaural beats are used in a variety of meditations. A 2008 study by the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine found that brainwave entrainment can also be used to treat a variety of issues, including headaches, premenstrual syndrome, stress, and even behavioral problems. The brain stores trauma and sound trauma in the same place but it can be reprogrammed and rewired thankfully. To further explain and simplify the science behind binaural beats and musical entrainment, it is simply a process of synchronizing two different beats to become harmonious. Brainwave entrainment works by pulsing a different sound in each ear to stimulate the brain into altered states of consciousness. Learn more about chanting OM, and binaural beats, mantras, and transcendental meditation through our 2 part OM medicine podcast in season one.
- Music therapy. Specific music creates a brainwave state and brings us into a coherent state that stimulates. 1990 Gordon Shaw Francis Rousher UC Irvine positive impacts that complex harmonic music. Mozart effect. Designer music- is based upon the Mozart effect to get us to peak performance. There’s also a type of music called Metamusic that can be used to harmonize both hemispheres of the brain or illicit expanded states of awareness. But, music therapy isn’t limited to listening.
- Playing an instrument such as a drum for example is a form of sound healing. In fact, ancient and modern shamans employ drums and singing to access trance states. Researchers believe that repetitive shamanic drumming and singing open a pathway to the subconscious, bringing an opportunity for healing and integration. Behavioral science is deconstructing shamanic methods to understand their value. This research is working its way to the intersection of science and spirituality, with ground-breaking discoveries in healing with frequency, tone, and music. If you don’t play an instrument even using tools like tuning forks will allow you to tune into different frequencies – all of our cells have a resonant frequency and tuning them into either positive or negative happens through entrainment.
- Singing is another powerful sound healing tool. Most non-singers don’t realize that more than half of the act of singing is actually listening. The best singers have incredibly attuned ears and can find tones that create a powerful vibration in their entire body. You can feel what they are singing even if it’s a soft song or a loud gospel belt. Singing songs that lift up your spirit does two things it raises your thoughts and your voice. I love the quote from Michael Bernard Beckwith that says “when you sing it you pray twice.”
- There’s a certain type of yoga called, Nada yoga. Nada Yoga uses external and internal sounds and vibrations. Singing Bowls, Gongs, Harmoniums, Mantras, Seed Sounds (Bija Mantras), Vowel Sounds, and more sound tools used to clear the 72,000 energy pathways (Nadis) of any blockages that might prevent Prana (life force energy) from flowing through. Ayurvedic practices and TCM also use many sound healing modalities and combine them with yogic practices. “The gong is not a musical instrument; the gong is God. It is the purest sound that man could create out of which comes all music, all sounds, and all words.”― Yogi Bhajan
- Dancing to music or movement medicine. Movement to tribal drums or dance beats is also a powerful sound healing technique. Using the vibrational energy of the music to move your body along to is a form of entrainment. If you allow yourself the freedom to get into a deep meditative state while dancing you will feel the healing benefits of movement medicine. To learn more about the benefits of dancing, listen to our episode on dance medicine, the power of shaking that ass.
- Vocal toning. Vocal toning means using your voice to harmonize and balance your cells and your energetic pathways. Whereas chanting mantras and songs (also known to heal, open and harmonize) uses rhythm, vocal toning is known for its steady state of one tone per exhale.
- Nature sounds bathing. We’re always advocating the healing benefits of spending time in nature for both the grounding and calming effects. But, you can also benefit from the vibrational sound frequencies in nature both audible and inaudible. One study published in Scientific Reports found that either getting into nature or even playing ‘natural sounds’ affects the bodily systems that control the flight-or-fright and rest-digest autonomic nervous systems, with associated effects in the resting activity of the brain. “In school, I could hear the leaves rustle and go on a journey.” – Clint Eastwood
- Sound bathing. Studies show that this practice, called “sound bathing,” directly reduces anxiety and depression; both are related to increases in disease. According to one study, “Sixty-two women and men with an average age of 50 reported significantly less tension, anger, fatigue, and depressed mood after sound sessions. Gong meditation, crystal bowls, tuning forks, bathing meditation, nature sound bathing are all forms of this technique and can be very healing.
So you can recite rituals, mantras, incantations, affirmations, prayers, practice toning, singing hymns, dancing, listening to binaural beats, and use musical entertainment tools. Bathing in nature, pleasant sounds, singing bowls, and musical entrainment is also highly effective.
“Music is what feelings sound like.” – Author Unknown
Key Takeaway:
The more out of tune you are, the more discord you are doomed to experience and thus the more dis-ease you will encounter. Surround yourself with people attuned for your greatest good. And find one of these techniques or all of these to practice prevention or to heal the discord in your body.
There is so much discord in the outer world and some of that we don’t have control over. This is why we must be diligent in our healthy rituals. I remember living in the city and suburbia and there were noises that just came with the territory. Now that those noises are removed, I realize how much I appreciate silence and sounds of nature. But, even in nature, there are sounds that make my nervous system freak out. Last summer baby barred owls were being taught to hunt at night and the sound was terrifying to wake up to. We’d hear scurrying in the forest and then a shrieking sound of terror but this was just nature doing its thing. So, whatever sounds you’re looking to add and omit to heal and to create internal and external harmony know that we are in tune with that decision.
It all comes down to living in resonance or dissonance. Like an untuned piano, it doesn’t matter what song you play, who plays it, it won’t ring true. I‘ll take a novice practicing their progression of chords over a concert pianist playing on an out-of-tune piano any day.
