Behind The Song: I’m On The Run

This was the first song we wrote in the Magnolia house. The house was a temporary studio for co-producer Mike Krompass. This was one of those songs that flowed out of all of us pretty quickly. Heather Jeanette came over and she had a beautiful melody ideas as soon as Mike Krompass played a few chords on his guitar. The house had so much magic in it and my visual mind was off running. Looking back, I am still in awe of the vibe in that room.

I’m On The Run is about running. We all run away, run into, run from, get caught running and end up spinning in circles. I think most people these days feel like they are constantly running. Even if we aren’t running, maybe we are dreaming about running. I have a runaway fantasy that always comes into my mind especially in the summertime. There’s festival vibes in the air; dust, windblown hair, heat, and gatherings near water. We used that vibe to write this song.

The chords came first, then the melody, then the “run, run, run” tag at the end of the chorus and then the rest was word smithing and figuring out what places around the U.S. to incorporate.

I love to travel and disappear so in singing this song my adventure enthusiast really comes out. The places mentioned in the song New York, Malibu, Mississippi, Santa Fe, and California. are all places I’ve been.  I pictured myself on a road trip and stopping every so often to throw a dart at the map. Then going to the place where the dart lands, with the intention of finding myself and healing my wounds from the past. Once I get to that place, I would start the process all over again.

As you listen to this song picture yourself running through these towns on an open highway with the wind in your hair and not a care in the world.

Zuri Star

Cadillac, suitcase, rose-colored shades
90 miles an hour on these Cali plates
A New York minute down in Santa Fe
Sweat pouring down like Mississippi rain

I just wanna go away, where nobody knows my name
Pick any place on the map, no strings attached

Cause I’m on the run
Coming undone
Trying to shake the pieces of a broken heart
Starting again
Wondering when
The pain will be just another mile mark
Oh there is just no stopping me, Til’ I find a remedy
I’m on the run

Dancing with strangers, under the moon
Sipping champagne up in Malibu
Feeling like a hot summer night in June
Damn this heat just reminds of you

I just wanna go away, where nobody knows my name
Pick any place on the map, no strings attached

Cause I’m on the run
Coming undone
Trying to shake the pieces of a broken heart
Starting again
Wondering when
The pain will be just another mile mark
Oh there is just no stopping me, Til’ I find a remedy
I’m on the run

Open my eyes, I’m hypnotized,
I’ve lost all sight of who I am,
Spinning in circles, on and on trying to catch me if I can
But here I am
I’m on the run
